State to Investigate Killing Procedure at Wexford County Animal Shelter

Posted: Updated:

The Wexford County Board of Commissioners is calling a special meeting on Thursday evening in regards to the allegations against the animal shelter by a former employee.

Kathy Dennis says the shelter illegally kills animals without proper sedation, and Sheriff Gary Finstrom says that statement is not true and his office complies with state law.

The meeting begins at 6:00 p.m. in the commissioner's meeting room.

The general public is welcome to attend the meeting.

A former employee says the Wexford County Animal Control Shelter does not sedate animals before they use a lethal injection.

Kathy Dennis says she spoke up about the process when she discovered it was illegal.

Sheriff Gary Finstrom says she is wrong and a shelter volunteer we spoke to agreed.

They say the shelter does sedate their animals and fully complies with state law.

Finstrom says the claims are just allegations from a disgruntled former employee that wanted a better job.

We did contact the Michigan Department of Agriculture to validate the claims of an impending investigation.

They say they have received official complaints and the investigation into Wexford County is in the initial stages.

9&10's Eric Lloyd investigated the allegations to get the entire story and has more details.
