Governor Declares Energy Emergency Due to U.P. Propane Shortage

Posted: Updated:

The cold weather has hit hard in Northern Michigan, especially the U.P.

That is why Governor Rick Snyder declared a State of Energy Emergency in Michigan under Executive Order 2013-3.

The extra cold weather calls for more heating in homes, which some areas in the U.P. are struggling to get due to propane shortages.

A propane terminal is currently repairing one of their pipeline in Rapid River which means propane suppliers must drive farther to get propane.

The executive order will suspend federal regulations and allow drivers transporting propane to travel as many hours or consecutive days needed to get propane to the U.P.

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration and the Michigan State Police are requiring these drivers to have a copy of the declaration, which can be found at the link to the left of this story.

The Executive Order 2013-3 is effective immediately and remains in effect until further notice or until February 3 at 11:59, whichever first occurs.
