Ferris State's C.J. Motte tabbed as CCHA Goaltender of the Week

Posted: Updated:

Big Rapids, Mich. - For the fifth time this season, a Ferris State University men's ice hockey student-athlete has claimed Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) Player of the Week accolades as sophomore goaltender CJ Motte (St. Clair, Mich.) was recognized today (Jan. 21) as the league's Warrior Goaltender of the Week.

Motte posted back to back wins over the Michigan State Spartans in a league home-and-home series this past weekend (Jan. 18-19). He had 27 saves and was the Perani Cup third star in a 2-1 road win on Friday before a sellout crowd of more than 6,000 fans and a nationwide television audience at Munn Ice Arena in East Lansing.

Then, on Saturday, the Bulldog netminder came back with 17 saves in a 5-2 victory at a sold-out Ewigleben Ice Arena in Big Rapids with one of MSU's goals coming on the power play. His weekend performance helped the Bulldogs move within two points of first place in the CCHA standings.

To date this campaign, Motte has posted a 11-9-3 overall record in net and has a .927 save percentage along with a 2.17 goals against average to date. He's tied for fifth in the nation to date with three shutouts and ranks 19th in the country in save percentage. In league play, he's fourth in save percentage at .936 and fifth in GAA with a 2.00 figure.

Earlier this season, Bulldog junior forward Andy Huff picked up the CCHA Postgame Offensive Player of the Week honor from the CCHA following FSU's series versus Mercyhurst (Oct. 19-20) while senior Kyle Bonis claimed the same distinction after the Bulldogs' sweep against Bowling Green State (Nov. 16-17).

FSU sophomore defenseman Simon Denis picked up the Gladiator Defenseman of the Week honor on Jan. 2 while freshman defenseman Brandon Anselmini was the Gongshow Rookie of the Week in the CCHA the same week.

Ferris State's weekend home-and-home sweep over Michigan State came in the final league regular-season series between the two teams.

Motte and the Bulldogs will be back in action this weekend (Jan. 25-26) as they travel to Notre Dame to take on the league-leading Fighting Irish for the only CCHA regular-season series between the two teams this season in South Bend, Ind. Puck drop is set to 7:35 p.m. (ET) on Friday night with the contest airing on CBS College Sports. Saturday's faceoff will begin at 7:05 p.m.
