Onaway Community Gathers To Fight For City Police Department

Posted: Updated:

An area community came together tonight, to support their local Police Department.

The Onaway City Commission is considering getting rid of their "One-Man" Police Department, due to a budget deficit.

The Commission sent out a three option survey last week, looking for the Community's input on how to help the suffering budget.

But residents are not happy with any of the options, especially the one that would close the facility.

One of their biggest concerns is response time, if they have to rely solely on the County and Michigan State Police.

Ronald Beatty says, "Right now, I'd say the minimum call would be at least a half hour before we'd get anybody here.  This is for a major crime or whatever it may be...lives could be lost!"

The City Commission expects to have all of the surveys back by February 1st, and then they will set up another meeting to discuss the issue further.
