Charlevoix Holds Emerging Drug Trends Forum for Prevention and Awareness

Posted: Updated:

A local community is working to curb the drug problem in Northern Michigan, by promoting education and awareness.

Scott Kelly, the Director of Bay Area Substance Education Services, visited the Charlevoix County Library tonight with hopes of spreading the truth about drugs in Northern Michigan.

He talked about drug trends; from over-the-counter prescriptions to heroine and synthetic drugs, Northern Michigan sees it all.

Kelly says the community can be vital in the fight against drugs, helping to stop abuse from resurfacing.

"The main thing is education and awareness, and not to just look the other way.  Some of these things move so fast that they really have to be aware of what it is and not just discount is as something else."

Kelly says that alcohol and tobacco use appear to be the community's biggest, preventable health problem, in people of all ages.

He travels all over Northern Michigan to educate and promote prevention.
