UPDATE: Cadillac Police Officer Funeral Arrangements Announced

The Cadillac Police Department announced funeral arrangements for Officer William Kanitz who died on Duty this past Tuesday.

The funeral for Officer Kanitz will be held this Saturday at the Cadillac High School gym on 400 Linden Street.

Viewing's for Officer Kanitz will be held from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and again from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Peterson's Funeral Home on 205 E. Cass Street this Friday.

UPDATE: Funeral arrangements have been made for Cadillac Police Officer Bill Kanitz.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday, January 19, 2013 at the Cadillac High School Gymnasium with Reverend Joel Hess officiating.

Friends may meet the family from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Friday at the Peterson Funeral Home in Cadillac.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the William M. Kanitz Trust Fund for the Grand Marias Breakwall Project.

A community is stunned by the loss of a police officer who died while on duty this morning.

Officer Bill Kanitz died from an apparent heart attack at the Cadillac Police Station.  He had been a member of the department for nearly 24 years.

Bill Kanitz was a long time patrol officer for the city of Cadillac.  His partner found him this morning and he was immediately taken to the hospital.

The captain of the department described Bill as a very intelligent and intuitive officer.  City officials say they are doing all they can to support Bill's family during this time.

The Wexford County Sheriff's Department helped the city with additional calls today as officers continue to deal with the tragedy.

Early this morning, an officer of the Cadillac Police Department died while on duty.

Patrolman William Kanitz was found unconscious by his partner and was taken to Cadillac Mercy Hospital where he was pronounced dead around 8:00 a.m. this morning.

Deputies from the Wexford County Sheriff's Office and Troopers from the Michigan State Police Post responded to the scene.

Officials are saying it looks as though Kanitz suffered a heart attack.

To cope with the loss of an officer, extra officers from the Wexford County Sheriff's Office will be assisting with police services for Cadillac.
