UPDATE: Man Riding ATV Falls Through Ice in Cheboygan

Posted: Updated:

A man riding his ATV to go ice fishing, fell through the ice Monday night - but he was able to make it out.

Police say 67-year-old, Michael Beurle was riding along the Old Black River in Cheboygan when he went in.

Beurle told Troopers that the water was over his head and all he could do was yell for help.

His 70-year-old neighbor, Raymond Rathbun, heard him and was able to help pull him out of the frigid waters.

Beurle is alright, but police had to continue working on getting the ATV out, well into the night.

Police are urging those going ice fishing and using the ice for other purposes, to make sure they are aware of the conditions before heading out.

One Michigan State trooper says that on Sunday, the river was open water, and there haven't been enough cold days to freeze it, completely.

Beurle says "he couldn't have held on for much longer," and credits Rathbun with saving his life.
