Burmese Refugee Visits Northern Michigan

After spending years in a refugee camp, Patrick Lana is experiencing life in northern Michigan.

The United Nation's relocated Patrick to Virginia about a month ago.

He has been visiting the Maier family in Oscoda County near Mio for the past two weeks.

Patrick fled Burma 15 years ago. The country remains in a civil war after more than sixty years of fighting.

Patrick saw snow for the very first time while staying in northern Michigan.

The family met him on a visit to a refugee camp in Thailand. His brother Thomas is still at the camp and is trying to relocate to the U.S.

On Friday, Patrick will fly back to Virginia where he will continue working to become a U.S. citizen.
