CDC: Binge Drinking is an Under-recognized Problem Among Women

Posted: Updated:

A new C.D.C. report says the problem of binge drinking among women and girls is not getting the attention it deserves.

Women who drink four drinks or more on one occasion are considered binge drinkers by the C.D.C. The study analyzed the drinking habits of 278,000 women nationwide.

The report says one in eight women are binge drinkers and calls the problem under-recognized.

The behavior increases the risk of breast cancer and heart disease, among other health problems.

Central Michigan University is trying to reduce the trend with all its students. Incoming freshman are now required to learn about the effects of alcohol through an online seminar.

High school students were also mentioned in the report. One in five high school girls are considered binge drinkers.

9 and 10's Kyle Mitchell and Photojournalist Jeff Blevins have more on the report.
