Rose City Elementary School Will Close This Fall

Posted: Updated:

A northern Michigan elementary school will close its doors for good at the end of the school year.

The West Branch-Rose City School Board voted to close the Rose City Elementary last Thursday.

Kindergarten through six grade students in Rose City will be moved out of the elementary to the middle school this fall.

The seventh and eighth graders from the middle school will attend Surline Middle School in West Branch. The district says it has been working on a solution to a budget shortfall for more than a year.

Closing the school will save an estimated 484,000 dollars a year.

Some teachers and staff will lose their jobs with the consolidation. It is still unclear exactly how many positions will be cut.

9 and 10's Kyle Mitchell and Photojournalist Tony Zyber have more on the decision.
