Local Governments React to New Emergency Financial Manager Law

Posted: Updated:

Many local governments in Northern Michigan like the additional options.

State takeovers have mostly been focused in the Southern part of the State.

But, controversy over Emergency Manager Laws have now spread Statewide.

The Kingsley Village Manager, Adam Umbrasas says that while his city is on strong financial footing, he is taking a look at the new law.

He says, since the original law was put in place very few state takeovers have been necessary.

Still, not every local government can take care of its own financial health.

"There's communities that need something like this to happen.  Ultimately it's up to good leaders and good management," says Umbrasas.

Many hope the repeal of an Emergency Financial Manager Law in November and the new law signed today, will finally put the controversy to rest.
