Man Shot and Killed as Chase Ends in Traverse City

An Oscoda man is dead after police in Traverse City shot him during a traffic stop.

Police say Gary Welch got out of his car with a high powered rifle, pointed it at officers and refused to put the gun down.

They then shot the man, killing him.

A chase began in Crawford County after Welch was initially pulled over for swerving over the center line.

Five different departments were involved in the chase.

The chase ended in the front lawn of his estranged wife and other relatives in Traverse City.

At a press conference around 11:00 am, police detailed the incident leading to the shooting, another press conference will be held at 3:45 this afternoon.

No police were hurt in the incident.

State Police are currently investigating the entire situation.
