Congress Shuts Down SS Badger Coal Ash Dumping

Posted: Updated:

The Coast Guard Reauthorization Bill usually holds a historic exemption for the SS Badger, allowing it to dump coal ash into Lake Michigan.

It's something the EPA has banned.

For the past 60 years, the Badger ferry has connected Ludington with Manitowac, Wisconsin, making daily trips during the shipping season.

Congress passed the bill without the badger exemption, meaning the EPA ban on coal ash dumping applies to the historic ship.

The Lake Michigan Car Ferry company must now either negotiate an extension with the EPA, fix their waste issue or dock the ship for good, a nightmare situation for the town.

9&10's Eric Lloyd and photojournalist Jacob Johnson were in Ludington today and have more details.
