Clare County Meals on Wheels in Dire Need of Volunteer Drivers

Posted: Updated:

A Northern Michigan program that helps feed the elderly is having trouble delivering.

Senior citizens rely on their local Meals for Wheels programs for a warm meal five days of the week.

But in Clare County -- there's a huge need for volunteer drivers.

They've already had to reduce one of the routes from 5 days a week -- to just 3 days, handing out frozen meals instead of warm ones.

The concerning cuts could soon reduce even more routes.

And the deliveries are about more than just meals -- they're about human contact, a safety net for the seniors who are alone.

The struggle doesn't have to continue if more drivers, like Denny and Ruth Wissinger, step up and volunteer.

"I worked for 34 years, but I didn't get the kind of appreciation or the feeling of having done something worthy like I do with this job... and it's not a job," said Ruth Wissinger, who delivers for Meals on Wheels in Farwell.

9&10's Evan Dean and Photojournalist Tony Zyber rode along with two volunteers and have more on the program's concerns.
