Officers Recognized at Sault Ste. Marie Commendation Ceremony

Several officers earned awards tonight, Monday, at the Sault Ste. Marie Police Department's Annual Commendation Ceremony, which took place during the City Commission meeting.

Officer Brian Mattson and Officer Nathan Kaczmarek earned a Merit Commendation for locating a residence that was on fire and alerting the occupants.

Officer Kaczmarek also earned a Life Saving Commendation for performing CPR on a woman, saving her life.

Sgt. Francis DeShano and Border Patrol Officer Donald Natzke also earned Life Saving Commendations for rescuing a woman from the power canal during the winter.

Officer Derek O'Dell and Officer John Weist both earned Police Medal of Honor for pulling a woman from a burning apartment building.

The Police Department also paid honor to Detective John Weir, who passed away in 2004 from illnesses resulting from an assault while on duty in 1990.
