Great Lakes Water Levels Hurting Shipping Industry and Recreational Harbors

Posted: Updated:

As water levels continue to drop in the Great Lakes, the shipping industry and recreational harbors are suffering.

The water is at near-record lows on Lake Michigan and Lake Huron.

And on Lake Erie, Ontario, and Superior are all below their historical averages.

Because of this, freighters are being forced to lighten their loads.

Congress used to provide money to dredge channels and repair other infrastructures, for small communities.

Those area are now trying to find ways to bring in more recreational traffic, like fishing charters and sailing yachts.
