HS Volleyball Semifinals: Beal City advances, Onaway swept

Posted: Updated:

Beal City and Onaway were in Battle Creek on Thursday for the Volleyball State Semifinals with a chance to set up an All-Northern Michigan Volleyball State Championship on Saturday.  While Beal City managed to punch its ticket to the Finals, Onaway got tripped-up by a perennial Class D powerhouse.

Beal City drew Mendon.  After dropping the first set, the Aggies won each of the next three sets to earn a spot in the Class D Championship game, 3-1.  Addie Schumacher led the Aggies with a team-high 13 kills.

On the other side of the bracket, Onaway saw its season come to an end at the hands of 6-time defending Class D State Champ Battle Creek St. Philip, 3-0 (25-9, 25-8, 25-17).

St. Philip had its way with Onaway in each of the first two sets, but the Cardinals gave the Fighting Tigers a battle in the third set.  Onaway kept pace with St. Phil to make it 7-7 in the third before seeing the Fighting Tigers go on a 13-to-1 run. Onaway then went on a 9-2 run of its own before St. Phil put things away.

Beal City and St. Philip play for the Class D title Saturday morning at 10 AM at Kellogg Arena in Battle Creek.  This is the first volleyball State Finals appearance in school history for the Aggies.

Traverse City St. Francis is also making its first State Finals appearance on Saturday.  The Gladiators play Monroe St. Mary's Catholic in the Class C Championship at Noon.

9&10 News is sending a crew to the Cereal City and will have a complete wrap-up of the Class C and D Championships on 9&10 News at 11 on Saturday.
