Hunters Hoist Their Prize at the 58th Mancelona Buck Pole Contest

Posted: Updated:

The first day of firearm season brings an Antrim County tradition that's lasted more than five decades.

It's the 58th annual Mancelona Buck Pole Contest, where hunters are hoisting their prize bucks today and tomorrow.

Several hunters found some early-season success this morning.

We caught up with a nine-year-old girl who'd managed to take down a nice spike.

She and her parents stopped by the buck pole to show off her prize, and make a heart-felt dedication.

"I did this deer for my poppa... My poppa died a couple of years ago, I was really upset because I was really close to him," said Ruby Hastings, who shot the deer.

The buck pole contest lasts all day tomorrow as well.

Prizes will be given out for the heaviest deer, and most antler points -- along with several other awards.

9&10's Evan Dean and Photojournalist Jake Johnson stopped by the buck pole and have more success stories from hunters.
