Michigan Man Facing Prison Time and Fines for Creating Fake Charities

A West Bloomfield man facing prison time and fines for establishing fake charities and veterans groups.

Attorney General Bill Schuette announced today that Neil Thrasher will spend 17 months to 10 years in prison, pay $29,257 in restitution to Paralyzed Veterans of America and $45,143 to Disabled American Veterans.

Thrasher plead no contest to creating 2 fake charities called The Paralyzed American Veterans and Disabled Veterans of America. The two names are very similar to the two well known veterans associations.

On October 3rd, Thrasher plead no contest to an Oakland County judge to two counts of embezzlement from a charitable organization and one count of violation of the charitable solicitation act.

Thrasher collected more than $180,000 from January 2008 through April 2012.
