Central Dispatch Receives Upgrade in Technology

Posted: Updated:

The 9-1-1 dispatch for a few Northern Michigan counties is getting a major upgrade.

The Central Dispatch Authority for Cheboygan, Charlevoix, and Emmet Counties received the upgrade to their phone systems.

Residents with a GPS equipped cell phone can let dispatchers know their exact location, allowing emergency responders to get to them faster.

They also eliminated traditional telephones, and instead have touch-screen computers used by dispatchers via a wireless headset.

The new system was purchased from a $300,000 grant awarded by the Department of Justice.

As soon as phone provider networks evolve, this system will be able to accept text messages, photos and video.
