Scholarship Recognizes Students Service to Veterans

Posted: Updated:

A local teen's passion for helping our veterans will now help Mason County students with their college bills.

A scholarship was presented at Mason County Middle School in Scottville today to recognize the work of high school senior Andrea Miller.

9 and 10 News first met Andrea Miller in 2009.

We were there as she was meeting Stacie Gelina, the wife of her pen pal, Mark Gelina who was serving our country overseas.

Mark was killed in action and Andrea wanted to keep in touch with his family.

A friendship between the two formed and so did a devotion to veterans.

Her time and services to veterans hasn't gone unnoticed. Today,  Rolling Thunder, a group committed to helping veterans recognized her.

The award will be named after Andrea and will be given to other students who serve veterans in their communities.

Andrea hopes that other students continue her work, as she will leave for college next fall.
