Northern Michigan Man Accused of Selling Counterfeit Software

Posted: Updated:

A Montmorency County man is accused of selling counterfeit software he bought from China and Singapore.

Bruce Edward, from Atlanta, is charged with criminal copyright infringement and mail fraud.

According to the indictment, Edward illegally distributed counterfeit copies of Microsoft Office 2003 Professional and Microsoft Windows XP Professional software.

Acting Special Agent in Charge William Hayes said, "counterfeit products and commercial piracy weakens the economy and is a direct threat to American innovation. Intellectual property theft amounts to economic sabotage, which is why HSI will continue to aggressively pursue product counterfeiters and those who sell counterfeit products."

Edward is accused of making more than $140,000 between 2008 and 2010 by selling more than $25,000 copies of the counterfeit software on e-Bay.
