Posted: Updated:

A man will pay a huge fine after he destroyed protected land for the Kirtland Warbler in Roscommon County.

William Colston admitted he built a sand volleyball court, horseshoe pits and an outdoor shower on land that's part of National Wildlife Refuge System.

The wildlife area provides a habitat for endangered birds.

The property that he built these recreational activities is next to his vacation home, his family has had this vacation home since the 1970's.

Colston ignored several notifications from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service telling him to remove the illegal additions from the federal land.

Colston was ordered to pay $26,000 which will be used to restore the land.
