UPDATE: Central Michigan University Professor Suspended Pending Child Porn Investigation

Posted: Updated:

UPDATE: A Central Michigan University professor was suspended on Monday accused of possession of child pornography.

Central Michigan University held a news conference at 4:30 Thursday regarding the suspension and described how they obtained the evidence.

CMU information technology employees found child pornography on a Central Michigan University computer Monday morning and reported it to campus police.

William Merrill, a College of Education and Human Services professor, is facing numerous charges related to possession of child pornography and one for the possession of a switchblade.

Merrill was suspended, placed on leave and banned from campus during the investigation.

There is a warrant out for Merrill's arrest.

Police know where he is, but are not yet able to arrest him. He is currently seeking psychological help for the situation.

The professor has worked for CMU since 1987.

A university spokesperson says there is nothing in his file to indicate this kind of past behavior.

Police Chief Bill Yeagley said, "There is much more processing, much more forensic investigation that needs to be done and certainly we're going to do that in the proper fashion and wait for the results."

The CMU Police Department is working with the Isabella County prosecutor on the investigation. If you have any information related to this case, contact the CMU Police Department at 989-774-3081.
