Health Department Lifts Final Health Advisory for Bay Harbor

Posted: Updated:

A big milestone for one Emmet County community after the Health Department of Northwest Michigan lifted a final health advisory at Bay Harbor, near Petoskey.

The health department first issued an advisory in 2004 when they discovered dangerous pH levels in the water.

This was because Bay Harbor is on the site of an old plant that left behind leachate from cement kiln dust.

Though the advisory's gone, there will be ongoing monitoring.

CMS Land Company is in charge of cleaning up the site.

They still collect leachate, but the health department says the property is now safe.
