Woman Escapes Kidnapping in Mecosta County

Posted: Updated:

It was a terrifying series of events that lead to the death of the kidnapper this afternoon.

Police say the woman was kidnapped by her ex-husband as they visited a cemetery near Cadillac.

The suspect also raped her.

He loaded her into the back of her car until she was able to escape at a gas station near Stanwood in Mecosta County around noon.

The 43-year old Robert Mongar then fled police until he intentionally drove his car into a tree in Newaygo County.

Police say he was threatening to kill himself before the crash and the woman was giving him a ride to court tomorrow in Berrien County.

9&10's Eric Lloyd was following the story as it developed and has more details.
