UPDATE: At least 50 people are dead in the U.S. from super-storm Sandy and it is still battering much of the East Coast.
President Obama has now declared a major disaster in New York and Long Island.
Also, Authorities have launched a rescue effort after a broken levee flooded a small northern New Jersey town early Tuesday, it left about 5 feet of water in the streets within 45 minutes. Officials are using boats to try to rescue about 800 people.
The water was around 13.5 feet at Battery Park around 9:30 PM, completely surpassing the all-time record of 11.2 feet, set in 1821.
The National Hurricane Center says the storm's top winds were approaching 90 miles per hour and first made landfall in Southern New Jersey.
They say Sandy will collided with a wintry storm moving in from the west, causing blizzard warnings for parts of Virginia.
More than 8.2 million customers are currently without power, in 11 states.
Subways, buses, trains and schools are shut down from Washington to Boston and several New York City tunnels are completely flooded.
And the New York Stock Exchange closed Monday and Tuesday.
The super-storm affected 50 million people from the East Coast to the Great Lakes.
