Downstate Driver May Face Charges in Rollover accident in Clare Co.

Posted: Updated:

An accident Saturday morning in Clare County that resulted in a car being totally destroyed by fire, caused concern, when the driver couldn't be found.

It happened on Bringold Avenue near Washington Road in Surrey Township.

The original call reported the 1997 Pontiac four door was engulfed in flames.

A search of the area for the driver was unsuccessful, but the 18 year old from Mt. Morris, Nicholas Smith, showed up at the accident scene about two hours later.

He told deputies he was alone in the car when he lost control, and it rolled once and caught fire.

Smith was taken to the Clare E. R. For treatment of minor injuries.

Deputies say alcohol was a factor in the accident and charges against Smith are pending.
