Commercial Airline to End Service in Manistee

Posted: Updated:

For the second time this year, a Northern Michigan airport's commercial airline is flying out of town -- for good.

This year's been tough for the Manistee County Blacker Airport.

Now, they're taking another hit.

Starting next week, the airport will no longer be able to provide service to and from Chicago Midway.

In May, Manistee signed with Public Charters -- who sub-contracted an airline to make the flights.

On Friday, that sub-contracted company announced they will no longer provide the service.

It's out of the airport's control -- but now, they're forced to cancel flights.

There's simply not enough time to find a replacement before the current service ends.

"If we're talking multiple weeks of service interruption, it's certainly in the hundreds of people that are gonna be inconvenienced," said Barry Lind, director of the Manistee County Blacker Airport.

We called the sub-contracted airline to get an explanation for their decision. They had no comment.

And they haven't given the airport a definitive reason either.

Public Charters is hoping to find the airport a new carrier by as early as next month.

Right now, that's the best case scenario.

9&10's Evan Dean and Photojournalist Jake Johnson sorted through the airport's situation and they have the story.
