Traverse City Mayor Wants to Ban Water Bottles

Posted: Updated:

The mayor of Traverse City wants a ban on disposable water bottles.

Mayor Michael Estes wants any city festival sponsor to instead hand out reusable bottles that people could fill up for free at water stations.

He says it's because of the excess of water bottles found littered during the National Cherry Festival.

The Executive Director of the National Cherry Festival calls the ban extreme.

The proposal would ban the sale of water bottles by vendors but would not stop people from bringing them in.

The issue will be open for discussion at tonight's City Commission meeting.
