Boardman River Dam Failure Prompted State of Emergency in Grand Traverse County

Posted: Updated:

A failure of a Boardman River dam prompted a state of emergency, evacuations and flash flooding, in Grand Traverse County yesterday.

The Brown Dam was in the process of being removed, but something went wrong with the temporary dewatering structure around 10 AM and a torrent of water came rushing down the Boardman, from the pond the dam holds back.

The water receded later into the evening and people were allowed to return home, however many are now dealing with flood damage.

Coordinators of the Boardman River Dam Project say they do not know yet what kind of impact the flooding had on the environment.

It's something they say they will need to study in the weeks ahead.

Meanwhile, two roads remained closed today, thanks to the breach and High Water.
