Wexford County Recycling Center Can No Longer Afford to Take Glass

Posted: Updated:

The Wexford County Recycling Center says it can no longer afford to take glass.

For several years the center has been taking the glass to the landfill, because it costs too much to send it to the southern part of the state for processing.

When the county owned the landfill, they were able to find ways to use the material at the site, but now are charged for each load.

John Divozzo, the Director of Public Works says that costs nearly 10% of the Department's budget.

"What we're looking at is...trying to make cuts within the budget trying to improve other areas of operation.  Focus on those materials that actually provide revenue to us."

The county is looking for other ways to use the material.

The center will stop accepting glass very soon and wants people in Wexford County to throw it in the trash.

Kyle Mitchell has more on the county's decision to stop taking glass.
