Parents, Teen Drivers, and Instructors Weigh in on Cell Phone Bill

Posted: Updated:

There are a lot of opinions about a proposed law that would make it illegal for young drivers to use cell phones behind the wheel.

We talked to northern Michigan parents, teen drivers, and a driving instructor about the proposed ban.

The driving instructor says cell phones are the number one distraction on the road. Dialing and taking your eyes off the road even for just a few seconds can be deadly. Talking itself can also be a distraction.

Thirty two states do not allow teens to use cell phones while driving.

Many parents say something needs to be done to protect teens but not everyone is convinced a ban will work.

Driving instructors say the best thing to do is to teach young drivers about the dangers or, if needed, take away their phone before they drive.

9 and 10's Kyle Mitchell and photojournalist Jeff Blevins have more on the bill.
