City of Big Rapids Reduces Penalty for Open Alcohol Containers

Posted: Updated:

The City of Big Rapids is changing the penalty for having open alcohol containers in public places.

On Monday, the city council unanimously voted to change the ordinance from a misdemeanor crime to a civil infraction.

The city attorney recommended the change. The ordinance was originally put in place in the early 1990's when police say there was a serious problem with people walking around and openly drinking alcohol.

The Director of Public Safety says the city received several complaints from people who have had trouble finding a job because the misdemeanor gave them a criminal record. She says the police department is not dealing with nearly as many incidents and that people will still have to pay a $225 fine.

9 and 10's Kyle Mitchell and photojournalist Joel Deaner have more on the change and what it means.
