Baby in Critical Condition, Mom's Boyfriend Accused of Abuse

Posted: Updated:

A baby boy remains in the hospital with injuries that could kill him -- the victim of child abuse.

One year-old Trenton Ellis is in critical condition in a downstate hospital.

Police say his mother's ex-boyfriend abused Trenton three different times.

Andrew Basinski is facing three counts of first degree child abuse for several crimes last month at a home on South Mitchell Street in Cadillac.

Court records show Basinski was already on probation for another crime.

The baby's mother says she never saw this coming.

Now, she's angry -- and shocked.

"If I would have know this happened... Andrew would not have been in my home. But never in a million years did I think Andrew would hurt my kids. Ever," said Anna Ellis, Trenton's mother.

Police aren't yet releasing much about the nature of the abuse -- but we know the injuries are severe.

"In essence, he's been diagnosed with a lack of oxygen... Resulting in severe injuries to his brain," said Todd Golnick, detective with the Cadillac Police Department.

Trenton's family says they don't want to focus on their anger toward the suspect -- but rather, put all their energy into supporting Trenton's fight.

A facebook page, "Prayers for Baby Trenton" already has more than 700 members.

"It's a very good feeling knowing that there is people in the world that care. And that when something so bad happens to a child, everybody comes together and supports and prays for you... It feels very nice to know," said Anna.
