Michigan Apple Crops Suffering from Drought

Posted: Updated:

Many apple trees look nearly bare this season and that's bad for not only farmers, but for your grocery bill.

Because of the small crop this year, the prices of apples are jumping.

The apple crop experienced a killing frost with the extremely warm to cold temperatures earlier than normal this year.

So much so, that one local apple farmer had to close up shop for the season.

Edward Hanenberg has been selling apples and cider at his market for several years and tells 9 and 10 News that this is some of the strangest weather he has ever seen.

The damage to his crop has caused him to have to close down for the season.

Luckily, with the surplus of apples last year, he was able to sell cider throughout the summer.

The cost and labor of harvesting the apples just did not seem worth it this year, with so few on the trees.

Vanessa Fayz spoke with several companies who purchase apples each year and many of them said they have not finished negotiating prices for the season yet, but are expecting to see an increase.
