Great Lakes Water Levels Approaching Record Lows

Posted: Updated:

Water levels on the Great Lakes could soon reach historic lows.

Lake Michigan and Lake Huron are about two feet below the long-term average. Lake Superior is also very low.

The Watershed Center of Grand Traverse Bay says the record was set back in 1964. Low water levels make navigating the lakes more difficult. Freighters often have to take less cargo to avoid running aground.

Low precipitation and evaporation are the main reasons behind the low levels.

The center says they often see 30 year cycles between the highs and lows.

9 and 10's Kyle Mitchell and photojournalist Joel Deaner more on the impact this is having on navigating the lakes.
