No Junior Hockey in Traverse City This Season

Posted: Updated:

Bad news for hockey fans in Traverse City -- more tremendous hockey talent won't be returning to their ice this season.

There won't be a junior hockey team at Centre Ice this year.

Last year's squad -- the T.C. North Stars -- packed up and moved to the Soo.

A new league brought opportunity for a new junior team -- the Traverse City Cohos -- but the franchise fell through last week.

The fallout comes shortly after another big loss for the arena.

Because of an NHL labor dispute -- the Detroit Red Wings canceled this month's prospect tournament at the arena.

And the team's training camp -- held a week later -- also hangs in the balance.

"Between the training camp, and our golf outing, and the prospects, and the junior team -- financially, it's a pretty big hit," said Terry Marchand, executive director of Centre Ice.

There's a chance the new team could be ready to go next year.

And Centre Ice says other programs are thriving, which will help ease the blow.

9&10's Evan Dean has more on the impact of the loss.
