Cosmetology School Destroyed After Fire

UPDATE: The fire at the Up North School of Cosmetology broke out around 5:30 on Thursday evening.

Crews battled the flames for more than 3 hours, the windy and dry conditions posed additional challenges.

The school's owner, Harvey Nelson says he vowed to his students they will graduate.

Plans haven't been finalized about what will become of the school, which is closed indefinitely.

NEW AT ELEVEN:  A hair styling school near Petoskey caught fire closing US 31 for a while tonight.

The Bear Creek Fire Department responded to up north school of Cosmetology after five.

When crews arrived, they found flames and heavy smoke.

US 31 was closed and traffic re-routed around the area.

Crews on the scene say the fire started outside the building and quickly spread to it.

Emergency responders said the fire was tough to fight because of gusty winds.
