West Nile Death Toll in Michigan Hits Five

Posted: Updated:

Another death in Michigan due to the West Nile Virus -- and rising concern from state health officials.

It's the fifth West Nile death reported this year -- with the total number of cases in Michigan reaching 87.

The Michigan Health Department is working to warn the public of the growing problem.

The majority of the cases are coming out of Texas.

Fortunately, there haven't been any cases reported from Northern Michigan.

The Centers for Disease Control believes the total number of cases for this season could hit a record high, based on the spike in cases this week.

A Ferris State microbiologist says there could be several factors behind the rapid outbreak -- but hot temperatures seem to top the list.

"We had a very mild winter this past year, that's something everybody in Michigan celebrated six months ago, but now we're seeing more mosquitos," said Anne Spain, with F.S.U.

To protect yourself -- you need to take the obvious precautions.

Wear long sleeves or pants, and use bug spray.

Avoid standing water, or going outside during dawn or dusk.

9&10's Evan Dean and Photojournalist Tony Zyber spent the day looking into the outbreak, and they have the story.
