With the cost of college rising and the financial burden weighing down entire families, some parents are encouraging their college-age students to save money by living at home and commuting to class.
A new survey from Fidelity finds that nearly 50 percent of parents would consider having their students stay at home, thereby skipping out on paying room and board.
That's up from 34 percent of parents who said the same thing in 2007.
Room and board makes up about one third of college expenses each year.
Some wonder if this could hold back a student's sense of responsibility since part of the "college experience" can be living on your own for the first time and managing a budget.
