UPDATE: More Layoffs at Northern Michigan Dairy Plant

Posted: Updated:

We now have an update on a local dairy plant that continues to lay off workers.

Dean Foods in Evart will lay off 54 workers in the next few months.

The Texas based company anticipates closing the Osceola County plant completely early next year.

Just about 60 workers will be left to get to that point once this round of layoffs goes through.

This announcement is the latest fallout from Dean Foods after losing a big contract to provide milk to Meijer stores.

A Dean Foods representative released this statement to 9&10 News: "we sincerely regret this difficult decision and the impact it will have on our dedicated employees and the community of Evart...by early next year, we anticipate it will no longer be economically viable to operate the Evart plant, and we are significantly reducing the plants production this year. We are committed to assisting our employees through this transition."

Earlier this summer the plant cut 43 employees.
