Cyber Schools Continue to Grow in Michigan

Posted: Updated:

The number of cyber schools continues to grow and some wonder what they mean for K-12 education.

Governor Snyder is supportive of increasing cyber learning opportunities.

In the education world opinions are mixed on their effectiveness.

The principal of Traverse City College Preparatory Academy, a local charter school, says the previous administration put a lot of emphasis on cyber instruction and learned it does not work well for every student. He says they are now going to screen students more carefully for the program.

Districts are able to offer more classes online that they normally could not afford.

The superintendent of Kalkaska Public Schools says some students may do better in an online program than a traditional school. The district is starting its own cyber school this fall.

9 and 10's Kyle Mitchell and photojournalist Joel Deaner have more on how the schools work.
