Many Old Mission Peninsula Vineyards Looking at an Early Grape Harvest

Posted: Updated:

One winery on Old Mission Peninsula says this is the warmest year on record, that's not so great for the majority of our region's fruit crops, but grapes thrive when it gets hot. A fear of the unseasonably warm, March weather turned into fortune for Chateau Chantal, they say this will be their earliest harvest in more than 20 years. The vineyard left extra buds from last year on their vines, they didn't lose anything this year, in fact, they have extra; but, the grapes are bit smaller in size.

In contrast to the corn crop, grapes don't need a whole lot of rain to grow. Wineries expect people heading north much sooner to get a taste of the early harvest.
