New Hope For Vacant Casino in Vanderbilt

Posted: Updated:

An Otsego County casino -- vacant for more than a year.

Now, there's hope it could cash in once again.

Today, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit ruled to "vacate an injunction" that shut down the Bay Mills Indian Community's Vanderbilt casino.

The injunction -- handed down in March of last year -- forced the tribe to temporarily close their small casino just off I-75.

Overturning the injunction doesn't mean reopening is a done deal.

Bay Mills says they still need to resolve other issues, but this is one step toward moving forward with their planned developments.

For the small village of Vanderbilt, even the thought of the boarded up casino opening up again is reason to rejoice.

"Even this news will raise the morale of the folks in the village. It's a glimmer of hope for the future," said Elizabeth Haus, Clerk for the Village of Vanderbilt.

The Michigan Attorney General's Office says they disagree with the decision issued by the 6th Circuit.

They say their team is reviewing their options, and determining whether or not to appeal.

9&10's Evan Dean dug into the controversy today, and has the story.
