Maneuvering large vessels around the Great Lakes is not an easy task.
We spoke with an instructor at the Great Lakes Maritime Academy in Traverse City about the challenges near Neebish Island where the freighter ran aground.
Weather conditions, currents, and shallow water can make getting through the channel difficult. The area called the rock cut can be especially hard to navigate.
The freighter is blocking a one-way channel preventing shipping traffic from leaving Lake Superior.
