Leelanau County Administrator Says Commission on Aging Director Approved Overpayment of Employees

Posted: Updated:

Leelanau County Administrator, Chet Janik, says the time sheets and the amount of money paid to Commission on Aging housekeepers just wasn't adding up. All eyes turned to the Commission on Aging Director of more than 25 years, Rosie Steffens. She was soon put on leave.

The housekeepers get mileage reimbursement one-way to clean a senior's home; but, all 14 of them were tacking on extra miles, and it was approved by Steffens. From January to May this year, they've discovered $5,500 was paid to housekeepers in miles they never actually traveled.

The county says this has been going on for years, now their biggest fear is how much was wrongfully paid out.

The Administrator says they're in talks with an accounting firm on how this could impact the county. Since it's still under investigation, no legal action has been taken against Steffens, yet.
