New Animal Shelter to Open in Mecosta County

Posted: Updated:

It may be quiet now -- but one building in Mecosta County is turning into a top-notch, temporary stay for man's best friend.

The old animal shelter in Big Rapids is closing its doors for good.

But it doesn't mean cats and dogs in Mecosta County won't have a place to stay.

The Animal Rescue Coalition is taking over -- and putting the finishing touches on a brand new shelter.

By mid-fall, the old county shelter will close, and a new, non-profit, no-kill shelter will start housing animals.

It's spacious, and will even have an area outside for animals to exercise.

The coalition hopes it will be a nice, temporary home for the animals.

"All I want, is for the animals' lives to be as good as possible when we have them -- and then, to find them a great home," said Cate Arroe, director of the Animal Rescue Coalition of Mecosta County.

The coalition is getting money from the county to operate the shelter -- but are trying to fundraiser the cost of the building.

They're hosting a fundraising event this Saturday in Canadian Lakes.
