Health Dept. Warns About Rabies After Bat Bite

Posted: Updated:

A local health department is warning people about the dangers of rabies after someone was bitten by an infected bat.

Luckily, the person got treatment right away and will fully recover. It happened recently at a home in Manistee.

The District Ten Health Department deals with several confirmed cases of animals infected with rabies ever year. Exposure to rabies is fatal without treatment.

The health department says the person did the right thing in the Manistee case by capturing the bat. The animal has to be sent in without damage to its head or spinal cord for testing.

If a bat is discovered in a room with a child, someone sleeping, or incapacitated, the health department considers them exposed. If you get bitten while you sleep, you man not even know it.

The medical director says bats play a crucial role in nature and does not want bats to get a bad name because of rabies.
