Onekama Disincorporation Fails

Posted: Updated:

After many years of controversy, a decision on the disincorporation of the Village of Onekama.

The proposition failed.

Township: 254-Yes  166-No

Village: 86-Yes  139-No

Total: 340-Yes 305-No

It would have taken a 2/3 of the township and village combined vote for the village to be dissolved into the township.

This would be the first time a disincorperation would happen in Michigan.  There have been vocal supporters in favor and opposed to the disincorporation.  If it passes it would mean village residents no longer have to pay village taxes.

Some see this as a positive but there are those who worry about their services and the logistics of this happening for the first time in Michigan in their town.

9&10's Ann Marie LaFlamme and photojournalist Tony Zyber have the details.
